When off-the-shelf software stops fitting

Off-the-shelf software is the right answer for a lot of problems. But every small business has a few things it does differently, and those differences are often why customers choose you. When your software can’t handle them, your team fills the gap with spreadsheets, sticky notes and retyping.

Custom software closes that gap. It can be a native app your customers download, a web app your staff use every day, or a small tool that connects the systems you already have. The point is the same: the software follows your process, not the other way around.

Custom software doesn’t have to be big. It might be a booking flow that knows your real schedule, a calculator that turns a customer’s answers into a ballpark estimate, a check-in tool for staff or volunteers, or an app that puts your loyal customers one tap from you. Often the smallest, most focused tool saves the most hours.

We build for small businesses, startups and organizations in Kansas City, Austin and nationwide, and we build to last. That means apps that are tested, maintained and owned by you.

How we work

1. Understand the work first

Before anything is designed, we learn how the work happens today: who does what, where things slow down and what a good day looks like. That conversation shapes every screen.

2. Plan in plain English

We write down what the first version must do, what can wait and how we will know it is working. You get a clear scope and a sensible order of work, not a pile of technical terms.

3. Build, test and ship

We build native apps for iPhone and Android and web apps that work in any browser. The rules that matter to your business are covered by automated tests, so updates don’t quietly break them. We handle the App Store and Google Play submissions for you.

4. Keep improving after launch

Phones update, stores change their requirements and your business grows. We stay on to ship fixes and new features, so your app keeps working long after launch day.

What it looks like in practice

Our own products are the clearest proof of how we build, because we live with every decision.

  • Press It! Craps and Press It! Crapless are two free play-money craps games, each on iOS and Android, so four native apps plus a marketing site. They model 42 bet types with correct casino math, use physics-based 3D dice backed by a published 10,000-roll fairness report, and offer an ad-free subscription through native App Store and Google Play billing. The apps are localized in English, Spanish and German and have thousands of downloads. Automated tests keep the website’s bet and odds pages matching the apps, so they can never drift apart.
  • PaddleVision is an augmented reality paddleball game for iOS and Android. It turns any room into a game arena, with a virtual paddle in your hands, multiple game modes, progressive difficulty and high-score tracking.

Both are in the stores today, and we keep building on them. That same long-term care is what we bring to client apps and custom tools.

Why partner with Ember Digital

Plenty of developers can launch an app. Fewer stick around to keep it healthy. We plan with you in plain language, build software that matches how your team really works and stay on after launch for updates and support.

You own what we build. Your store accounts, your code and your data stay in your business’s name, so you are never locked in. If you have an app idea or a process that’s outgrown your software, let’s talk it through.

Apps & Software in our work

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to build an app for a small business?

The cost of a small business app depends mostly on how many features the first version needs and whether it runs on iPhone, Android or both. A focused first version with a few core features costs far less than a full-featured product. We scope a clear first release with you before quoting, so you know what you are paying for.

Should I build a native app or a web app?

Build a native app if customers will use it often on their phones, need it in the App Store or Google Play, or need features like the camera or in-app purchases. Build a web app if it is mainly for staff or occasional use and should work from any browser. Many businesses start with a web app and add native apps later.

Do you publish apps to the App Store and Google Play?

Yes, we handle App Store and Google Play submissions, store listings and release updates for you. We set up the developer accounts in your business’s name so you always own your apps. We have shipped native iOS and Android apps for our own products, including Press It! and PaddleVision.

Who maintains the app after it launches?

We do: we stay on after launch to ship fixes, keep up with phone and store changes, and add new features as your business grows. Apps need regular updates to keep working well. You get one partner who knows the software, instead of starting over with someone new.
