Website Design & Development

Your website is your front door, even when you’re closed
Most customers meet a small business on a phone, usually from a Google search, before they ever call. If the page is slow, broken or confusing, they don’t wait. They tap back and call the next shop on the list.
A good small business website does three things well. It loads fast on a phone. It tells people plainly what you do, where you do it and why you’re worth calling. And it makes the next step obvious, whether that’s a quote request, a booking or directions.
Many of the sites we see were built years ago on WordPress, a page builder or an older platform. They still mostly work, but they’re heavy, hard to update and full of dead links. The fear of losing Google rankings keeps a lot of owners stuck with them. A careful rebuild fixes that.
Rebuilding without losing what you’ve earned
Search rankings are built over years, page by page. When a site is rebuilt carelessly, old addresses stop working, Google finds a wall of errors and the phone gets quieter. We treat a migration as a checklist, not a hope:
- Every old URL is preserved. Each one is mapped to its new home and redirects in a single hop, not a chain of jumps.
- Every word comes along. Your existing copy is carried over intact, and anything we change is a decision we make with you.
- Old problems get fixed, not copied. Duplicate titles, broken store links, expired security certificates and leftover theme demo content are cleaned up before launch.
- We watch after launch. We keep an eye on errors and crawl reports and fix what turns up.
How we work
1. Listen and audit
We start with your business: who calls, what they ask, and what kind of work you want more of. Then we audit your current site so we know every page, every URL and every problem before we touch anything.
2. Design for the phone first
Most of your visitors are on a phone, so that’s where the design starts. Clear headlines, readable text, one-tap calling and directions, and a contact path that doesn’t make anyone hunt for it.
3. Build light and migrate carefully
We build lean pages, resize and compress images automatically, and set up the redirects, structured data and sitemap that help Google and AI answer engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity understand your business.
4. Launch, then stay
Launch day is the start, not the end. We check that every old link lands where it should, fix anything that surfaces, and stay available when you need a change or a new page.
What it looks like in practice
Adventure Motors is an off-road build shop in Grandview, in the Kansas City metro. Its old WordPress homepage weighed 5.5 MB across 164 requests. The new one is about 250 KB across about 30 requests, roughly 20 times lighter. Every old WordPress URL was preserved, with each redirect resolving in one hop.
MCA WoodWorks, a remodeling contractor serving Lee’s Summit, Kansas City and Johnson County, came to us on a WordPress page builder. We moved the site and its blog posts, redirected every old URL in exactly one hop, and saw 404 errors drop 96–98%. All 49 sitemap URLs return a clean response.
Bellicose Church in Kansas City had a 2014-era site on an aging platform, and its security certificate had expired, so visitors saw browser warnings. We carried over every word of the existing copy and verified it automatically: 688 of 688 content chunks matched. Ten old URLs redirect permanently, including some we only found through Google’s crawler logs and the Wayback Machine.
Why partner with Ember Digital
We’re a small studio serving the Kansas City metro and Austin, plus clients nationwide. You work directly with the people building your site, and we explain decisions in plain language instead of jargon.
You own your stuff. Your domain, your accounts and your content stay in your name. If you ever want to move on, nothing is held hostage.
We stick around. Most of our clients keep working with us after launch, adding pages, tuning search, or adding an admin so their team can update the site themselves.

Will I lose my Google rankings if I move my site off WordPress?
Not if the migration is done carefully. Rankings drop when old URLs break, so we map every old address to its new page and redirect it in a single hop. We also carry your existing content over and watch for errors after launch.
Why is my small business website so slow?
The usual causes are oversized images, too many plugins and scripts, and a heavy theme. On a phone with a weak signal, that adds up fast. A lean rebuild with properly sized images often makes a site many times lighter.
Can I update my new website myself?
Yes, if you want to. We can build a simple admin around the content you actually change, like services, events, photos or blog posts, so you don’t need a developer for everyday edits.
Do you build websites outside Kansas City and Austin?
Yes. We’re based in the Kansas City metro and the Austin area, and we work with small businesses and organizations nationwide. Everything from kickoff to launch works well over video calls and email.
